Background of the Study
Motorcycle transport businesses in Okigwe have emerged as a vital component of the local economy, offering affordable and accessible transportation solutions. These businesses facilitate daily commutes, improve connectivity, and support various economic activities by linking rural areas with urban centers (Chima, 2023). The low startup costs and flexible operations make motorcycle transport an attractive enterprise for many residents, particularly in areas with limited public transportation options (Uzo, 2024). In addition to providing employment, these businesses contribute to the informal economy and generate revenue through passenger fares and goods delivery services (Ifeoma, 2025). However, challenges such as regulatory issues, road safety concerns, and fluctuating fuel prices affect their sustainability. This study appraises the economic significance of motorcycle transport in Okigwe by examining its contribution to local employment, income generation, and overall economic development.
Statement of the Problem
Motorcycle transport businesses in Okigwe, while economically significant, face multiple challenges that hinder their sustainability. Regulatory constraints, inadequate road safety measures, and volatile fuel prices have negatively impacted the operational efficiency and profitability of these businesses (Chima, 2023). These issues limit employment opportunities and reduce the potential economic benefits for the community (Uzo, 2024). Additionally, lack of formal support and infrastructural challenges further exacerbate these problems. This study seeks to investigate the underlying causes of these challenges and propose strategies to enhance the economic contribution of motorcycle transport businesses in Okigwe (Ifeoma, 2025).

Research Hypotheses:

H₃: Targeted interventions can enhance the operational efficiency of motorcycle transport businesses.
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it examines the economic importance of motorcycle transport in Okigwe and the challenges it faces. The findings will help policymakers, business owners, and community stakeholders develop strategies to optimize the sector’s contribution to local economic development and job creation (Chima, 2023).
